Why are Christians always saying the earth is 600o years old?

Only a small minority believe the world is only 6000 years old. Likewise, only a small minority think the days in Genesis were 24 hour days. The word yom, usually translated day, is used in two different senses in the very first verse where it appears, and in other senses again in the first couple of chapters of Genesis.
